Muralists unveil artwork showcasing Indigenous resilience

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Two Albuquerque-based indigenous artists unveiled their massive mural depicting pueblo empowerment. The newest mural at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center is a seven-panel mural titled “Poeh Ah Ka Wohatsey: The Emergency Teachings of Resilience.”

The two Indigenous artists said their artwork focuses on Pueblo empowerment of the past, present, and future and this particular piece is a visual story of Po’pay, the Tewa religious leader of the 1680 Pueblo Revolt.

“This used to be the old Albuquerque Indian School, so some of my grandparents have been through here and that’s really exciting to be here in a really positive way, with a mural like this… and to me, that is what resilience is,” said Povi Marie, Indigenous muralist.

The mural can be seen at the IPCC until June of next year.
