On Wednesday, May 15, Neil Young & Crazy Horse closed out an earth-shaking two-night billing at Queens, N.Y.’s storied Forest Hills Stadium. Carrying on the seismic energy of the Love Earth tour–Young’s first run with Crazy Horse in a decade–the ensemble let loose a thrilling program of stone-cold classics and cherished rarities, opening with a ripping “Cortez the Killer.” The group followed through with such essentials as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Down by the River and “Powderfinger,” deeper cuts like Zuma heavy-hitter “Danger Bird” and a tour debut of “Mansion on the Hill” and an extended solo acoustic sequence from Young, which included gems like “Comes a Time” and “Heart of Gold.” Ever the firebrand, Young courted controversy on night one by standing up to the storming elements with a high-voltage set that earned an order to turn it down from a state Supreme Court Justice; he sure didn’t, cranking his amp towers through night two and even playing his guitar in a particularly heated highlight.
