Night of Museums 2024 marked by protests

The upcoming Night of Museums, set for Saturday, May 18th, will feature over 260 attractions across 32 counties and Bucharest. This edition marks the 20th anniversary of the event in Romania. Despite this celebration, the National Federation of Culture and Mass Media Unions “CulturMedia” – CNS Cartel Alfa has announced protests for the same day.

Dragoș Neamu, the coordinator of international relations and cultural projects of the National Network of Museums in Romania (RNMR), said that through this protest the employees demand a 20% increase in salaries. “You will notice that many museums in the country do not appear on the Night of Museums 2024 program, their representatives can be found and supported in Piaţa Victoriei (…). It is about a protest that I, personally, consider legitimate and support, because the stake is a 20% increase in salaries in the museum sector, for any professional position, to balance the great inequities and discriminations that exist within the cultural sector between , for example, museums and theaters,” he wrote in a post on Facebook.
Protesters will meet on May 18, at 16:00hrs in front of the National Library, on 22 Unirii Boulevard, then will go marching to the Culture Ministry and the protest will take place in front of the Government’s building in Victoriei Square from 19:00hrs to 23:00hrs.

In 2023, the 19th edition of the Night of Museums was organized together with cultural institutions from the Republic of Moldova and was present in over 360 museums and spaces from 90 towns in Romania and nine others across the Prut. They geographically covered 38 counties and five districts of the neighboring country. In Bucharest, the Night of Museums was presented to the public in 65 of the most diverse cultural objectives – from 34 museums, to design festivals and from houses of creation and experiments, to palaces and art galleries.
