Towards the end of episode four, Nico and Tommy present a new piece of evidence in front of Raymond that leaves the latter speechless. Meanwhile, Rusty ends up losing his calm and pummels an important suspect to the ground.
The episode opens with Tommy prepping Carolyn’s son, Michael, for his upcoming appearance in the witness box. Michael, in his mind, was sure of Rusty’s alleged crime. His belief in Rusty’s guilt becomes stronger when he remembers his mother’s confession about being scared of a colleague.
Elsewhere, Detective Rigo finds a match for the second semen sample in the Bunny Davis case, and Rusty accompanies her to the questioning of this newfound suspect. The duo carefully assesses Brian Ratzer and tries to extract the truth out of him. However, Rusty ends up intimidating Ratzer, which foils their approach. This encounter eventually comes back to haunt Rusty towards the end of Presumed Innocent Episode 4.
At his home, Rusty ruthlessly interrogates Kyle regarding his presence near Carolyn’s house on the night of the murder. While Kyle reveals that he was aware of Rusty’s extramarital affair, his father’s unhinged tone while questioning him gives a glimpse into Rusty’s deteriorating sanity. Barbara, on the other hand, struggles between her individuality and her role as a family woman. Despite her ever-growing internal conflicts, she returns home after Rusty calls her and apologizes.
Things take a turn for the worse when Nico and Tommy reveal that Rusty’s skin has been uncovered from underneath Carolyn’s nails. Raymond and Rusty are astonished to learn of this development, and the latter counters by stating that the evidence has been planted to frame him. These events take a toll on his mental state, and Rusty ends up taking it out on Ratzer when he reaches the Sabich house to confront him.
