Oak Lawn tech students ace MVCC competition

The Oak Lawn Community High School Career and Technical Education Division participated in the 2024 Moraine Valley Technology Challenge Competition.

The team of Patrick Komosinski and Alan Soto took second place and the team of Ramis Rizvi and Nathan Tapirdau took first place in the electronics competition which focused on soldering and circuitry.

Three students taking graphic design courses competed in the computer graphics competition using Adobe Photoshop, where Scott Edwards took home the first place prize. Winning first place in the A+ IT Computer Servicing was the team of Ammar Elayyan and Thomas Paternostro.

Business students competed in document creation using Microsoft Office. Other students who gained valuable experience in the events were Zayda Goetz, William Martin, Mia Reyes, Sean Wortel, Christian Sweis and Evan Thacker.

“The Moraine Valley Community College Tech Challenge is always a tough competition,” department chairwoman Jennifer Faro said. “The teachers put in a great effort preparing their students to compete. I am proud of everyone who went out and competed.”

Sandburg MedClub finishes season strong

Students in Carl Sandburg High School’s MedClub recently competed at the state level, with seven members returning home with top-10 medals. (School District 230)

Students in the MedClub at Carl Sandburg High School in Orland Park recently competed at the state level with seven members returning home with top ten medals.

Students pitted their skills and knowledge against over 60 schools in Illinois.

Junior Adunolaoluwa Ogendengbe took seventh and sophomore Iman Ansari placed 10th in Clinical Nursing; junior Aashvi Kothadia took 10th in Dental Terminology; and sophomores Julia Khouri and Tala Hennawi earned fourth place and senior Sarah George and sophomore Hannah George took ninth in Emergency Medical Technician.

Oak Lawn’s Burke takes Chick Evans scholarship

Oak Lawn Community High School senior Eoin Burke has been awarded the Chick Evans Scholarship for Caddies.

The Chick Evans Scholarship for Caddies is a full tuition and housing, four-year college scholarship for golf caddies. Burke will soon decide which of the 24 leading universities he will attend.

Olympia Fields’ Halpin lauded by Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra

The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra honored longtime employee Trish Halpin with the 2024 Leo Michuda award on April 13. It’s one of the highest honors IPO can bestow upon an individual.

“Trish Halpin has been the backbone of IPO for nearly 20 years,” IPO executive director Christina Salerno said. “Her exuberance for the orchestra has kept things running smoothly behind the scenes, allowing fantastic performances to flourish on the stage. Leo Michuda and his family have given so much to the orchestra — talent, time, resources, encouragement — and it is extremely fitting that Trish receive this award for her lifetime service to IPO in Leo’s extraordinary memory.”

Frankfort’s Oliver to chair state Medical Society board

Robert J. Oliver, M.D., was elected Chair of the Illinois State Medical Society’s Board of Trustees during its recent annual meeting.

Oliver is board-certified in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He serves on the medical staff of Silver Cross Hospital. He works with Premier Suburban Medical Group in the south suburbs.

Active with ISMS since 1991 when he joined as a medical student, Oliver has served in dozens of council and committee roles as he ascended in leadership. He has served on multiple boards including at the county medical society level in addition to other organizations and medical groups.

Oliver earned his medical degree from the Southern Illinois University School of Medicine where he also completed his combined residency in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics. He attended the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana for his undergraduate degree.

His term as Chair of the ISMS Board of Trustees will run through April 2026.
