Storm chances increase starting Thursday

Storm chances increase across parts of New Mexico Thursday, with scattered afternoon storms continuing into the weekend. Temperatures will also cool off with the higher chance for rain.

It is a hot afternoon across New Mexico with most of the state climbing into the mid and upper 90s along with the triple digits. Highs have been in the 100s from Carlsbad to Clayton today. There were also a few scattered showers and thunderstorms across New Mexico, mainly south of I-40. For most areas, these showers have ended tonight, but rain moved over the South Fork Burn scar area, causing a Flash Flood Warning to be issued. These showers will be ending overnight and the threat of flooding is lowering.

Thursday begins a stretch of a more active monsoon pattern across New Mexico as high pressure starts moving across the state and more moisture begins moving in. More storms will develop Thursday afternoon from southwest to northeast New Mexico. Storms could drop heavy rain, especially over the HPCC burn scar area where a Flood Watch is in effect. Temperatures will still be very hot, but a degree or two cooler for most areas. Some showers and storms will stick around late Thursday night into early Friday morning before ending by sunrise.

Scattered afternoon showers and storms will continue each afternoon and evening across parts of New Mexico into the weekend, with the highest chances for rain Friday and Saturday. Each afternoon will bring a chance for heavy rain, especially over burn scar areas. Temperatures will also be slightly cooler into the weekend with the increasing rain chances.

Some drier air will move in starting Sunday, causing storm chances to become more isolated and spotty. At the same time, temperatures will also be heating back up into the middle of next week too.
