On Tuesday, May 28, Tedeschi Trucks Band brought their Wild Deuces Tour to Seattle’s Paramount Theatre. During the two-set offering, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, and their incomparable band leaned heavily into material off their latest studio endeavor, I am The Moon, in addition to covers, which peppered the show. Amongst the highlights was the band’s ode to the late Bill Walton, who passed away on Monday, May 27.
While the first frame of music was a standard assemblage of material, Tedeschi Trucks Band stepped out. It drew upon any pre-event expectations during the latter portion of their performance. They began with “So Long Savior,” with Tedeschi filling Isaac Eady’s seat behind the kit and adding rhythm beside Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell. TTB’s ensuing take on “Part of Me” featured a tease of “I Can Feel You Smile.” Next, the band positioned Aretha Franklin’s “It Ain’t Fair” with Derek and the Dominos’ “Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad?”
Let Me Get By cut “Anyhow” preluded Tedeschi’s own “Just Won’t Burn” and eventually a cover of Dr. John’s “I Walk On Guilder Splinters.” The show’s high point occurred next, with the arrival of special guest guitarist Jeff Fielder, who assisted in the night’s paired renditions of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” Given the Pacific Northwest’s proximity to Walton’s former Portland, Ore. stomping grounds and his known admiration for the San Francisco jamband, the play felt like a fitting homage to the colorful sportscaster, decorated NBA athlete, and esteems fan of the Dead.
Following last night’s concert, which culminated in a finish after Fielder returned to the stage for an encore cover of Joe Cocker’s “High Time We Went,” he wrote on Instagram of his experience, “Incredible night getting to sit in with Tedeschi Trucks Band. I’ve had the pleasure of knowing these fine people for almost a decade now and it never gets any less thrilling. This band is a freight train. When people talk about seeing Hendrix or Jeff Beck, that’s the way I feel about seeing Derek. An absolute master in his prime. Susan is an absolute powerhouse and has such a flawless ease to her singing and playing. The band is quite literally the best in the business. I’m truly honored to be able jam with these greats!”
