What is the Diffing Algorithm in React?

The Diffing Algorithm is used to efficiently update the DOM Tree by identifying changes between the newly created virtual DOM and the previous version of the DOM after any updates. React leverages this algorithm to optimize the process of rendering updates.

How Does the Diffing Algorithm Work?

Initial Render: The content is rendered on the webpage, and the initial DOM tree is created.

State Change Detection: Upon any user interaction or data change from an API, React, using observable patterns, updates the nodes in the virtual DOM.

Reconciliation: The old virtual DOM tree is compared to the new version to determine the necessary updates.

Optimized Instructions: React generates a set of minimal and optimized instructions to apply the changes to the real DOM.

DOM Update: Only the content that has changed is re-rendered on the webpage.

Assumptions for the Diffing Algorithm

React uses a heuristic approach for reconciliation based on these key assumptions:

Different Element Types Produce Different Trees: Elements of different types will result in different trees.

Static Elements: Elements that don’t need to be checked can be set as static.
