Vehicle crashes into Irvine home, with 1 dead found inside — but not from the collision

A vehicle crashed into an Irvine home early Monday, and a dead person was found inside — but police don’t believe the collision was the killer.

A half-mile away, a knife-wielding man got into a confrontation with at least one officer and was shot and injured.

It was unclear if the two situations were somehow related.

“We’re trying to understand the relationship between the (man with the knife), the crashed car and the victim,” said Kyle Oldoerp, an Irvine spokesman.

About 2:15 a.m., police responded to the crash in the area of Whistling Swan and Wetstone. They found the vehicle had crashed into the home, Oldoerp said, with the person discovered dead inside.

How the person died was unclear. The victim’s identity was withheld by police pending notification of relatives.

At 3:25 a.m., police learned of a possible suspect, walking in the area of West Yale Loop and Stone Creek South, Oldoerp said. At least one officer fired at the male, whose age was unknown.

He was taken to a hospital in unknown condition, Oldoerp said.
