October 4 ABQ Artwalk – This edition will feature new exhibits, pop-ups & venues. Event happens from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Downtown.

October 4-5 U-Pick Sunflower Farm – At Big Jim Farm, come and pick your seasonal sunflowers from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

October 4-5 The Show – Albuquerque’s longest-running comedy show happens every Friday and Saturday at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $12.

October 4-6 2024 Albuquerque Grecian Festival – Immerse yourself in the sounds of the bouzouki, the tastes of authentic Greek cuisine, and the eye-catching sights of dancers in colorful costumes.

October 5 Winrock Market – This market is presented by Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union and runs from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

October 5 Downtown Growers’ Market – This happens every Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon at Robinson Park.

October 4 Open Space-Time – Free art making in Meow Wolf Santa Fe’s community space, beginning at 12:00 p.m.

October 5 2024 Silver City Farmers’ Market – The market at 1120 N. Main St. in Silver City begins at 9:00 a.m. to noon.

October 5 3rd Annual Electric Car Show – Enjoy an EV car show in the Santa Fe Plaza beginning at 10:00 a.m.

October 5 MONSTERPALOOZA – Enjoy a night of rock music, comedy, and good food in Alamogordo starting at 7:00 p.m.

October 5 Farmer’s Market in Alamogordo – Check out offerings from local farmers, crafters, bakers, and more from Otero County. Runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

October 5-6 Harvest Festival Days – The Manzano Mountain Retreat is holding a Harvest Festival. The festival starts at 11 a.m. and wraps up at 5 p.m.

October 6 – SHAP 3rd Annual Zombie Run – Happening at the Santa Fe Railyard Park from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

October 6 Sunday Chess Club – Meet at Popolo’s Games in Taos beginning at 1:00 p.m. This free event is all ages.

October 8 Swing on the Plaza – Take part in a free dance lesson at 7:00 p.m. and a free dance at 8:00 p.m. in the Plaza De Las Cruces.

🔶 Balloon Fiesta 2024: What you need to know

2024’s Balloon Fiesta will take place from Oct. 5 to 13 at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque.

There are morning and afternoon sessions on Oct. 5, 6, 10, 11, and 12. Morning sessions only on Oct. 7, 8, 9, and 13.

Mornings are from 4:30 a.m. to noon.

Evenings are from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

🔶 VIEW: Schedule of Balloon Fiesta Events – The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is a nine-day event starting on Saturday, October 5, and ending on Sunday, October 13. The event draws out over 800,000 visitors each year and is one of the most photographed events in the world. Below is a schedule of events for this year’s Balloon Fiesta.

🔶 2024 Twinkle Light Parade applications open – The event, which is family-friendly and free, is scheduled for December 15 at 5:15 p.m. It’ll be in Nob Hill. Local businesses, the community, and school groups come together to present the dazzling sight. To get involved, you can apply here.

🔶 More buses coming to Albuquerque streets after ABQ Ride adopts new in-house testing – In partnership with the MVD, the first-of-its-kind testing kicked off earlier this month and already has trainees stepping into their new roles.

🔶 Flights between Albuquerque, Angel Fire expected to take off before 2025 – Advanced Air will offer seasonal flights between Colfax County’s Angel Fire Airport and Albuquerque International Sunport from December to March and June to September. The new partnership was approved by Colfax County leaders Monday morning.

🔶 Affordable senior housing coming to Albuquerque in 2026 – The Farolito project at Central and Eubank promises 82 apartments for lower-income seniors. The project site has been vacant for nearly two decades on property owned by the New Mexico State Land Office.

🔶 14 acres of the Albuquerque Bosque to close for restoration project – The Bosque south of Rio Bravo is choked with vegetation—a lot of it is invasive to the area. First, fencing will go up to block the area; then, people will start to see a lot of plants being removed and replaced with native species.

🔶 2024 Duke City Marathon coming October 20 – In addition to the marathon, there will be a free health and fitness expo taking place on October 19 at the Crowne Plaza Albuquerque. On race day Civic Plaza will be full of of spectators, volunteers, booths, vendors, music, food, and more.

🔶 Albuquerque Mayor Tim Keller appoints new chief of staff – Terry Brunner will manage the day-to-day operations of the mayor’s office, including constituent services and community engagement, strategic initiatives, and administrative responsibilities.

🔶 Museum of Nuclear Science and History opening new exhibit – The National Museum of Nuclear Science and History is unveiling a new exhibit: Mission Aerospace. The new exhibit is a multi-layered, interactive exploration of aviation history and aerospace milestones. The new exhibit opens June 22 and runs through October 6.

🔶 United’s opening playoff date is set, tickets on sale now – It has now been revealed that the club’s opening round match will take place on Sunday, November 3 at 6 p.m. Tickets for the match are currently on sale.

🔶 Albuquerque’s Old Town to receive upgrades to assist tourists in navigating the area – Old Town is one of Albuquerque’s most iconic spots full of history, culture, and character. It’s a tourist hot spot seeing new improvements in the coming year. One of those improvements is designed to help visitors navigate their way through the historic area.

🔶 New Mexico Fall Foliage Forecast 2024: When to see peak colors – This earlier onset could be a result of the hot summer we had in New Mexico. The state experienced the second hottest summer on record (with records going back to 1896). 2011 was the hottest summer on record in New Mexico, and that year leaves began changing around this same time.

🔶 Bernalillo County accepts grant to hire more firefighters, EMTs – The $262,000 grant is from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration and was accepted on behalf of Bernalillo County Fire Rescue. On Tuesday, commissioners voted to accept a $262,000 grant from the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration on behalf of Bernalillo County Fire Rescue for the hiring of two firefighter/EMT positions.

🔶 Walgreens offering free flu shots in New Mexico – The pharmacy says they will start offering free vouchers for the vaccine every Friday through November. This is part of the company’s effort to serve underserved and at-risk communities, where they say about half of their stores are located.

🔶 Temporary closure in Mt. Taylor Ranger District due to planned missile launch – The closure order will be in effect from October 4, 2024, at 2 p.m. through October 5, 2024, at 4 p.m. If necessary the closure will be in effect from October 12, 2024, at 2 p.m. through October 13, 2024, at 4 p.m. The missile launch is tentatively scheduled for October 5, with a backup date of October 13.

🔶 U.S. Forest Service starts reseeding efforts in South Fork burn scar – Over the next week, people in Ruidoso will see helicopters and airplanes flying over the South Fork burn scar dropping seeds and mulch. The work started on Tuesday with crews dropping a blend of grass and barley seed. Forest managers hope seeding will wrap up this week, and mulching could be completed by early next week.

🔶 Some victims of South Fork, Salt fires to receive supplemental financial assistance for energy costs – The payments will go out starting Oct. 3, 2024. Eligible households will automatically receive their payments by mail, requiring no further action on their part. To qualify for the Disaster LIHEAP supplemental benefit, households must have received a regular LIHEAP payment from Oct. 1, 2023, to June 25, 2024, and reside in one of the affected zip codes: 88355, 88345, 88346, 88312, or 88340.

🔶 Western New Mexico University sees increase in first-year student enrollment – In the lead-up to the fall semester, the university received a record number of first-year applications, highlighting the rising interest among high school graduates, according to the university.

🔶 Edgewood nature park asking for donations to help take care of 1-year-old bear cub – Maggie, who is just one year old, was brought to the park about two months ago after struggling to survive in the wild. Her diet consists of special dog food, vegetables, fruit, and nuts but she eats around a thousand dollars worth of food a month and the park is asking for donations to keep her fed.

🔶 City of Carlsbad approves trial ban on single-use plastic bags – The trial period will last for two years and will begin on February 1, 2025. Under the ban, restaurants and retailers within the city are not allowed to offer plastic bags to customers.

🔶 The Nature Conservancy plans to plant 5,000 seedlings on Hermit’s Peak Calf Canyon burn scar – The Nature Conservancy is inviting community members to help them plant 5,000 drought-resilient seedlings on the burn scar this weekend. The Hermit’s Peak Calf Canyon Fire scorched more than 340,000 acres between April and June of 2022 in the southern Sangre de Cristo Mountains and in San Miguel, Mora, and Taos counties.
