Winnetka mom arrested after toddler overdoses; his twin brother is in critical condition

A 22-year-old mother was arrested Thursday, July 11, after police learned her twin boys possibly overdosed on an unknown substance at their home, with one of them later dying at a hospital, authorities said.

Los Angeles police were called to the 20000 block of Sherman Way in Winnetka about 11:20 a.m. after the mother, identified as Jestice James, found both 3-year-old boys unresponsive, police said.

Paramedics arrived and tried life-saving measures before taking both boys to the hospital, police said, adding that the boys had ingested, or were exposed to the unknown substance.

James and others who live in the home were taken to the Topanga Community Police Station for questioning and James was taken into custody on suspicion of murder, police said.

The decedent was identified by the Medical Examiner’s office as Josiah James.

A witness told KTLA the parents were hysterical. Chris Burko, a neighbor, told the station he attempted CPR on one of the boys.

“I came in, there’s a kid sitting on the table, and I started giving him CPR, and my friend says, ‘Oh my God, there’s another one,’” Burko said.

James was being held on $2 million bail, inmate records show.
