Yo Gabba GabbaLand!, the spin-off to the popular children’s series Yo Gabba Gabba!, will premiere on Apple TV+ on Monday, 9 August. The surprising list of musical stars who will appear in the show has been announced.
Performing songs that resonate with the themes of each episode, Yo Gabba GabbaLand! has locked in some pretty big names, including Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Flea, Portugal. The Man, Anderson .Paak, The Linda Lindas, Kurt Vile, Thundercat, Diplo, and more.
While it’s a spin-off of the original series, that doesn’t mean that Yo Gabba Gabba’s cast wasn’t interested in coming back for more. Yo Gabba GabbaLand! will see the return of Brobee (Amos Watene), Foofa (Emma Penrose), Muno (Adam Deibert), Toodee (Erin Pearce) and Plex (Christian Jacobs).
Yo Gabba Gabba! aired from 2007 until 2015 but has remained popular in its absence. The new series will feature ten episodes. You can check out the trailer below.
The spin-off isn’t the first time the Yo Gabba Gabba! universe has attracted music superstars, with the original show featuring The Killers, Solange, Weezer, MGMT, and more. Plus, the show has starred A-list actors, including Jason Bateman, Elijah Wood, Sarah Silverman, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg.
In a statement on the Apple TV+ website, Tara Sorensen, Head of Children’s Programming for Apple TV+, said: “It has brought everyone at Apple so much joy to reimagine this beloved children’s series in the most vibrant, magical and colourful way possible for fans of all ages.
“The original characters, stories and music of ‘Yo Gabba Gabba!’ have a truly unique quality that captured the hearts of global audiences as it taught kids about the world around them.
“As we expand this wonderful world with friends both old and new, alongside so many brilliant musical guests, this iconic pop cultural phenomenon will undoubtedly uplift a whole new generation.”
Last year, Flea kickstarted a 15-episode podcast series called This Little Light, which featured a revolving door of the most recognisable names in music, including Rick Rubin, Cynthia Erivo, Patti Smith, and Margo Price.
This Little Light spotlighted teachers and early musical experiences – exploring influences and early lessons – and how they influenced the trajectory of Flea’s guests’ careers.
“I wanted to do This Little Light to benefit my music school, the Silverlake Conservatory of Music,” the bassist said. “The idea behind it being music education, falling in love with music and embarking on a musical journey for your life. Everybody’s path is so different, and it’s fascinating to learn how every musician came to music and developed their study of it over time.”
