A parent, a teacher and a former schools inspector give their opinion of landmark government decision for England
Single-word school ratings awarded by Ofsted in England are to be immediately scrapped, the government has announced. They will be replaced by report cards aimed at improving standards and helping parents to better understand schools’ strengths and weaknesses.
The four headline ratings awarded at the moment – outstanding, good, requires improvement and inadequate – will disappear as part of the radical changes.
They could help schools be a source of pride in their communities
The single-word ratings were unhelpful, if not misleading
We need an inspection system which aims to support schools rather than judge them
