The Chicago White Sox return home Thursday night after avoiding a three-game sweep with Wednesday’s 4-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Sox host the Cleveland Guardians to begin a four-game weekend series at Guaranteed Rate Field, seeking their 10th win of the season.

Chicago split its six-game road trip at St. Louis and Tampa Bay. The White Sox are 6-6 in their last 12 games overall after starting the season 3-22.

Cleveland rallied past Detroit in extra innings on Wednesday to improve to 4-1 in its last five games while remaining atop the American League Central at 24-13.

The Guardians are visiting the White Sox for the first time this season after capturing two of three matchups at Progressive Field last month. Cleveland has beaten Chicago in the series opener four straight times dating back to 2023.

Former Phillies and Reds right-hander Ben Lively makes the start for Cleveland, seeking his second win of the season. Lively has pitched well in four starts, compiling a 2.08 ERA while allowing one earned run in each of his past three outings.

However, he is winless in two road starts against the Red Sox and Braves. The Guardians blew a 2-0 lead in a 3-2 extra-inning defeat at Atlanta.

Countering for Chicago is Erick Fedde, who has been a nice surprise for the White Sox rotation. Fedde hasn’t lost a decision in seven starts, while the Sox are 3-1 in his past four trips to the hill.

The last time Fedde saw the Guardians was on April 10 when the right-hander was staked to an early 5-0 lead before Cleveland rallied for a 7-6 victory in 10 innings. Fedde allowed three home runs in five innings of work, including ones off the bats of brothers Josh and Bo Naylor.

Chicago owns a dreadful 1-11 record in series openers this season, while nine of those losses are by two runs or more.

Let’s back Cleveland on the run line Thursday night.
