Lionsgate has announced that Donnie Yen’s Caine, who debuted in 2023’s John Wick: Chapter 4, will get his own spin-off movie.
Announced in a press release, Lionsgate is expanding the world of John Wick with a new spin-off movie that will see Yen reprise his role as Caine. The movie is expected to begin production in Hong Kong in 2025.
What will the Donnie Yen John Wick spin-off movie be about?
Plot details remain largely under wraps at this time; although, Lionsgate did reveal that “the new film will continue Yen’s story arc following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4, as Caine has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.”
The new spin-off movie is being written by Robert Askins, known for working on Netflix’s The Umbrella Academy and AMC’s The Son. A director has not yet been announced.
The announcement comes shortly Chad Stahelski, who has directed all the John Wick movies up until this point, struck a deal with Lionsgate to oversee the future of the John Wick universe. Stahelski will produce Yen’s spin-off movie alongside Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee.
“From the moment Donnie Yen appeared on screen in John Wick: Chapter 4, he captivated audiences and created an authentic, emotional connection that left an inedible mark and had fans asking for more,” said Lionsgate Motion Picture Group’s Adam Fogelson. “The John Wick universe that Chad, Basil, Erica and Keanu have built offers a tapestry of fascinating characters brought to life by the most extraordinary performers, and we’re excited to have one of the world’s biggest superstars on board to continue this journey.”
Yen added, “Working on John Wick: Chapter 4 was an extraordinary experience. The reason these films resonate so deeply is because, like myself, Chad, Basil, and Erica push themselves to create action, fights, and stunts that are not only thrilling, inventive, and artistic, but also expressive of character, story, and emotion. Caine is an incredible character with a haunted past, and I am excited to return to the role.”
The Donnie Yen spin-off movie does not have a release date at this time. The next film in the John Wick franchise, the Ana de Armas-led Ballerina, releases on June 6, 2025.
