Lady Gaga has said the music she is currently working on explores the “art of intensity” and is “nothing like anything I’ve ever made before”.

The pop icon was speaking at the premiere of her new concert film Gaga Chromatica Ball in Los Angeles this week (May 23). The film, which is directed and produced by Gaga herself, captures a show from the Dodgers Stadium in Los Angeles in September 2022, and arrived on HBO Max today (May 25). No UK release date has yet been confirmed.

Speaking to Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans during a Q&A, Gaga said she has been working in the studio “every single day” recently, and hinted that the material will mark a departure from the work that fans are familiar with.

“I have written so many songs, I’ve been producing so many songs, and it’s nothing like anything that I’ve ever made before,” she said. “I love to break genre and I love to explore music. There’s something really beautiful and knowing that you will be loved no matter what you do.”

She went on to explain that her current phase began during the ‘Chromatica’ tour in 2022. “Something I’m definitely exploring right now is sort of the art of intensity and I think that the art of intensity actually began during this tour. But I’m not done with it yet,” she said.

It is not the first time Gaga has teased new music recently; she said earlier in the year that she is “writing some of my best music in as long as I can remember”.

She also recently announced she will return to Vegas with a ‘Jazz & Piano’ residency, a series she first launched in 2019. Gaga’s stay will kick off in June this year and will run until July. You can purchase any remaining tickets here.

Sharing a trailer for the new film, she wrote in an Instagram post: “Revisiting the tour leaves me speechless the way we had each other – you all showed up for music and art in a big way, and with a level of excitement and freedom that I will never forget. Stadium after stadium. Sold out crowds. The deafening singalongs.”

At the premiere, Gaga also revealed that she came down with COVID during five shows on the ‘Chromatica Ball’ tour in 2022.

“I shared it with everyone on my team. I said, ‘I don’t want anyone to feel uncomfortable at work and you don’t have to perform and you don’t have to work that day, but I’m going to do the show’ because I just didn’t want to let all the fans down,” she said. “And the way that I saw it also is like the fans were all putting themselves in harm’s way every day coming to the show.”

The last time Gaga released music as a solo musician was with 2020’s ‘Chromatica‘, which NME praised in a four-star review stating: “Gaga has fully embraced creating a pure pop album. The record is littered with catchy choruses and glossy production – but it goes deeper than that.”
