The female-led Brass Queens band has released a new single and music video for “Karma Queen,” the group’s sophomore reveal from their forthcoming album, Hot Tub Sessions Vol. I, due on October 18, 2024. On the new track, the ensemble pays tribute to the New Orleans brass band tradition, using its force to generate a sonic capture of the city’s vitality.
Brass Queens’ impending album was written by women in a category typically dominated by men. The track list reflects the 11-piece’s scope of inspiration, leaning into tropes such as Balkan, mambo, film scores, pop, and classic rock, as captured during recording sessions at New York’s Atlantic Records.
“After touring incessantly, we each wrote music reflecting our experiences on the road- from proving ourselves on new stages to the late-night rituals that brought us closer as a band. These songs are snapshots of our journey, capturing the highs, lows, and everything in between,” reflected Ally Chapel.
On “Karma Queens,” Alex Harris, Stephanie King, Minerva Johnson, Jenna Murdoch, Stephanie Young, Elizabeth Arce, Nora Nalepka, Heather Ewer, Ashley Baier, Caitlin Cawley, and Chapel combine their instrumental prowess as an intended source of inspired confidence and the belief in oneself, much like the High Priestess tarot card, which embodies intuition, guidance and the divine feminine.
Beyond “Karma Queens’” tie to tarot, the set as a whole draws on symbolism associated with arcana, relying on its strong visual identity from select suits that further intended meaning behind the compositions. The band will support Hot Tub Sessions Vol I by taking their instrumental strength outside of the studio and on the road this fall, with shows scheduled in select cities across the East Coast and Midwest, culminating to a close after an album release show at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl on Wednesday, Oct. 16.
