Sublime continue a glorious return to form today with the release of “Feel Like That,” the foundational ska-punk outfit’s first new offering since 2021. This sunny new track also marks the first recording issued by the newly-reformed combination, which joins bassist Eric Wilson and drummer Bud Gaugh alongside Jakob Nowell, son of the late frontman Bradley Nowell. Alongside its core trio, the selection also features the voice of Bradley, whose contribution traces its roots to a 1996 jam session caught on tape, and Stick Figure frontman Scott Woodruff, who got the ball rolling by sampling and recutting a new track from the coveted bootleg.
The bubbling, laid-back ska of “Feel Like That” is a proper family affair, uniting the father and son Nowell, as well as Woodruff, whose stick figure project is a living testament to the enduring legacy of Sublime’s music and message on the proliferation of the SoCal scene. Arising from Woodruff’s experimentation with the unearthed, unreleased improvised studio cut, affectionately termed “Eireen” by bootleggers and superfans, the collaboration came to be as a stroke of sublimity, aligning with the band’s reformation with Jakob following a celebrated Coachella appearance in April. “We are blessed that we still have all these old recordings and that we were able to stumble upon an outtake that has been sitting there waiting for all these years,” Wilson said in conversation with Rolling Stone. “They say timing is everything, and I think they were right!”
On the record, the pairing of vocals from Jakob and Bradley Nowell brings a tremendously powerful feeling of fond farewells and bold beginnings, as traded verse and chorus ring out like the proverbial passing of the torch to light up an exciting new chapter. On the fruit of Sublime’s continued effort to “collab with artists in different modern music scenes,” Nowell shares in a presser that “hearing my own voice on a track side by side with my dad’s voice really feels like the classic Sublime sound stepping into the modern era. SoCal music is my family’s pride and joy and our family is getting bigger everyday. ‘Feel Like That’ captures this new sentiment and we want it to be the first of many. Who wants to join the family next?”
At long last, the legendary group is back and set to bring its celebration to stages across the country this summer. Beyond a series of high-profile festival headline spots–including Virginia Beach, Va.’s Point Break Music Festival on June 1, Marshfield, Mass.’s Levitate Music & Arts Festival on July 7, and Ocean City, Md.’s Oceans Calling Festival on Sept. 27– the band will also stage a series of independent dates, with stops planned in Denver, Kansas City, Mo. and Denver, where it will take the stage alongside Stick Figure and Ziggy Marley.“Good things come to those who wait… and wait…and wait…,” Gaugh adds. “Awe hell, we’ve been waiting too damn long!!! Now hear this!!! This is the good shit that make you ‘FEEL LIKE THAT!’”
