Channel 4’s Spacey Unmasked looks into the claims brought up by Kevin Spacey’s brother, Randy Fowler, among other accusations. The documentary, which reveals sexual allegations against the two-time Oscar-winning actor, also discloses traumatic childhood experiences.
Kevin Spacey and his elder brother Fowler are now estranged. A 2017 Page Six report stated that the latter was a limo driver living in Boise, Idaho, then. They have an elder sister, Julie, who left home when she was 18. In 2017, Fowler released his memoir, A Moment in Time: Living in the Shadows.
Spacey Unmasked premiered on May 6 and May 7 in the U.K. and explores allegations of sexual misconduct against Kevin Spacey. The two-part documentary features interviews with ten individuals who have accused Spacey of sexually abusing them. Per The Hollywood Reporter, These men were not involved in the 2023 trial when he was acquitted of nine counts of sexual assault. In 2022, he also stood trial in New York on allegations actor Anthony Rapp filed against him. A jury had found him not guilty back then.
Randy Fowler made shocking claims about their childhood and his relationship with Spacey. Fowler, who appeared in Spacey Unmasked, alleged that their late father, Thomas Fowler, was a white supremacist and held secret Nazi meetings at their family home. He said the actor “didn’t have a normal childhood,” per The Wrap. Spacey’s brother further claimed that Thomas sexually abused both brothers when they were children.
The House of Cards actor has previously criticized Channel 4, claiming that the “dying network” attacked him with a “one-sided documentary,” per The Hindu. He believes the network did not handle the allegations against him and did not give him sufficient time to respond.
What did Kevin Spacey’s brother Randy Fowler reveal in Spacey Unmasked?
According to The Wrap, Randy Fowler spoke out about their childhood under the care of their white supremacist father. Fowler claimed their father was “full of so much hate.” The brothers grew up terrified of him and that Spacey “didn’t have a normal childhood.” Fowler further alleged that the Oscar-winner opted for a “way to survive in an environment that was not a loving family.”
Randy Fowler claimed their father “blamed the world for all of his problems” and denied the Holocaust occurred. Fowler said that Thomas “used to have these Nazi meetings at the house” and recalled “a big Nazi flag hanging up on the wall” in his father’s office. He added, “My father had a riding crop, and he used to beat the s–t out of me. Looking at it from my brother’s perspective, all he saw was Randy got into trouble a lot and he would just split. I never saw my father ever lay a hand on my brother, ever.”
In Channel 4’s documentary, Fowler further alleged that their father sexually assaulted him when he was a boy. Fowler claimed the assault began in the summer of 1961 when he was “only 13, 14 years old.” It occurred repeatedly throughout the years of his childhood. Describing the first instance, he said, “My father took me up to the master bedroom and raped me, he sodomized me, he gave me oral sex.”
Randy Fowler added that he screamed for his mother, who allegedly came knocking at the upstairs bedroom. She reportedly banged on the door, asking, “‘What’s going on in there?’” He added, that his father “put his arm up against my neck, threw me against the wall and said, ‘Don’t say a word.’ Then all of a sudden there was silence and she just walked away.” Fowler claimed that it went on for years after that.
Per Vulture, Fowler revealed in Spacey Unmasked that he had to threaten his father for the abuse to stop so he would not hurt Spacey. Despite that, he believes the actor’s childhood was difficult because of their family dynamics and the “violent” household they grew up in. Spacey’s acting became an “escape” because of “where he came from.”
Page Six reported that Randy Fowler previously spoke about their father’s sexual abuse in 2017. It was around the same time sexual assault allegations against Spacey had surfaced. Before that, Fowler had talked about their father in a 2004 interview when he first revealed about the assault. He had alleged that Thomas was a part of the American Nazi Party, describing him as an ultra-right-wing and a pervert.
According to CBS News, Fowler described their family home as a “house of horrors.” He claimed that he and Spacey never spoke about the abuse. Fowler also said that he was unsure if Spacey and their elder sister Julie suffered from the same abuse.
The Statesman reported that Randy Fowler was born in Colorado and is three years older than Kevin Spacey. Reportedly, Spacey was 16 years old when Fowler left their family home in 1975. Spacey Unmasked premiered on May 13 on Investigation Discovery for the U.S. audience and is now streaming on Max.
