The Atypical Family episodes 5 and 6 aired on JTBC and Netflix this weekend. Starring Jang Ki-Yong as Bok Gwi-Joo and Chun Woo-Hee as Do Da-Hae, the fantasy romance K-drama revolves around a mysterious woman entering the lives of a family with magical powers.

In the previous episode, Da-Hae realized that the family truly had magical powers and wanted to quit her scamming plan. Gwi-Joo became suspicious of Da-Hae’s intentions and followed her to a sauna. He discovered her calling a woman “mother,” leaving Gwi-Joo shocked. For context, she told him that she was an orphan.

The Atypical Family episode 5 begins with Da-Hae trying to fool Gwi-Joo into marrying her. In return, he kisses her, claiming they should feel emotions if they want to enter a union. Later, he learns that she was one of the students from a past fire incident that connected to him. She claims that he saved her at the time.

In The Atypical Family episode 5, Da-Hae’s effort to fool Gwi-Joo into marrying her continues to fail. But when she mentions a past incident, Gwi-Joo shows interest in her. She tells him that he has saved her from the fire accident where Gwi-Joo used to return using his powers. It was the day when his daughter Yi-Na was born and also the day when he lost his friend in that fire.

Earlier, he used to transport his friend back to that day, attempting to save him. Hence, Da-Hae’s story intrigues Gwi-Joo. However, he wants to know how he saved her because he was at the hospital when the accident happened. Initially, Da-Hae does not reveal her story to him until a triggering incident happens. When she visits Yi-Na at her school, Da-Hae learns that the teenager can read minds and knows her plans.

Yi-Na makes a deal with Da-Hae, stating that they will keep each other’s secrets to themselves. For context, Da-Hae finds out that Yi-Na stole her grandmother’s watch to impress her new friend at school. Also, she gave her shoes to that friend.

Da-Hae wants to help Yi-Na as the former thinks the teenager is bullied. But, for Yi-Na, it is the first time someone has become her close friend. Hence, she crosses the line to maintain the friendship and threatens Da-Hae with her secret. This is when Da-Hae discovers that Yi-Na also has the superpower of reading minds but does not want to tell her family.

During the school visit, Da-Hae somehow ends up in a room that brings back traumatic memories from her school’s fire accident. Gwi-Joo arrives at the right time to save her and learns about her past. The episode ends with him promising her that he will always save her.

The Atypical Family episode 6 begins with Gwi-Joo finding a connection with Da-Hae. He is willing to protect her and finds himself attracted to her. However, the recent incidents with Gwi-Joo and Yi-Na make Da-Hae quit her plan to scam the Bok family.

Additionally, Da-Hae’s fake mother meets Gwi-Joo’s family and reveals she is an ex-convict. While the family now does not want the lead characters’ union, Gwi-Joo attempts to win Da-Hae’s heart. Aside from his feelings, he wants her in his life because of Yi-Na.

Despite Yi-Na’s threats, she and Da-Hae have formed a bond. However, Da-Hae wants to stay away from the Bok family. On the other hand, her fake mother has not yet given up the plan and helps Gwi-Joo to woo Da-Hae.

Meanwhile, Gwi-Joo’s mother now doesn’t want his son to marry into an ex-convict’s family. She seeks the help of her daughter Dong-Hee (Claudia Kim) to look into Da-Hae. With her superpower of dreaming, Gwi-Joo’s mother accepts her son’s wish to marry Da-Hae. However, she warns Gwi-Joo that his heart will be broken if he proceeds with the union.

While everything goes according to Da-Hae’s plan, she somehow hesitates to marry Gwi-Joo. His kindness affects Da-Hae, and thus, she doesn’t want to hurt him or the Bok family. On the wedding day, Dong-Hee finds her family’s heirloom in Da-Hae’s possession. Meanwhile, the bride walks down the aisle, and Gwi-Joo’s mother becomes worried as she knows what will happen.

Listening to Gwi-Joo’s feelings towards her, Da-Hae feels bad. She tells everyone, “I am actually a fraud. You were my mom’s third target.” Further, Da-Hae explains how she and her family planned to scam him and his clan. In the end, she looks at Gwi-Joo and says, “You can’t save me.” Episode 6 ends on a heartbreaking note.

The Atypical Family airs on Saturdays and Sundays on JTBC and Netflix.
