Trey Anastasio is on a tear. Less than one week into his summer tour with Classic TAB–featuring bassist Dezron Douglas, drummer Russ Lawton and keyboardist Ray Paczkowski–the Phish frontman has staged a staggering five new songs, each more surprising than the last. For his fourth tour performance on Tuesday, May 14, Anastasio treated the crowd at Royal Oak, Mich.’s Royal Oak Music Hall to a debut titled “Mists of the Past,” which stood out from an intimate and personal performance of Phish classics and Anastasio originals.

Anastasio kicked off his first set with the essential “Cayman Review,” drawn from the artist’s 2002 self-titled solo venture, followed by his quarantine offering “A Wave of Hope” and Phish’s “Ocelot,” which were similarly paired during the band’s Chicago tour opener on May 9. The group continued with “What’s Going Through Your Mind,” which saw its debut alongside other new cuts “Poppy It” and “Demons” during the Chicago show, before presenting Anastasio’s beloved 1998 TAB original “The Way I Feel.” At long last, the frontman shocked his fans with the debut of “Mists of the Past,” then closed out the first frame with “Blaze On.”

After “Oblivion” Trey kept things fresh in the second set by merging his third-ever treatment of “All Pretending”–last performed in November of 2020–into “No Men In No Man’s Land.” Next came yet another rarity as the band issued the second live performance of Anastasio’s “Where They’ll Find Us,”  then switched things up shortly after for “Brian and Robert,” for which Trey donned his acoustic guitar. The secondary instrument saw further play after the set-two closer of TAB live staple “Wolfman’s Brother,” as the artist opened the encore with two stirring solo acoustic renditions of “Theme From the Bottom” and “Limb By Limb.” After all this excitement, the band issued “Carini” to conclude the performance.

Anastasio and Classic TAB’s concert at Royal Oak Music Hall is available to stream now via Live Phish. The band will perform again tonight at The Agora Theatre in Cleveland. For tickets and more information on upcoming performances through the summer, visit trey.com/tour/.
