Disney Plus’ upcoming K-drama Uncle Samsik will feature Song Kang-Ho in the lead. The director, Shin Yeon-Sik, recently teased how this drama’s plot is different from the others. The lead actor has also added his point of view regarding the project.
The storyline revolves around Song Kang-Ho’s character Samsik, a man of his word who likes to have three meals a day, even amid a war. On the other hand, the drama also features Byun Yo-Han as Kim San, an elite man who thinks about others and wants to feed the people of South Korea. How these two men join hands to achieve a dream amid the chaos is what makes the rest of the narrative.
Song Kang-Ho says Uncle Samsik will be different
Regarding how the director processed Song Kang-Ho’s character, Shin Yeon-Sik said, “I tried to reflect that Uncle Samsik is a person who understands and communicates through eating.” He wanted a person with an honest and pure-hearted personality.
As reported in Newsen, he further explained why he set the drama in the 60s. Yeon-Sik said, “Even though I have lived in Korea for over 40 years, I still feel unfamiliar and unable to adapt. I am always curious about why I feel that way, what the world and society I live in are like, and what the people who make up it are like.”
The director added, “There is a time I want to explore. I think it was exactly at this time. Depending on who sees it, it may be seen as a period piece or a noir, but to me, it seems like a romance, like the ugly duckling trying to dream the same dream without knowing what kind of duckling it is, but when a new world arrives, I realize my identity. This was a turning point, and we chose the 60s to express that.”
Song Kang-Ho, who is debuting in a drama series with Uncle Samsik, shared that this will be different from other OTT dramas. He said, “It is different from the OTT dramas that are trending now. So it can be more adventurous and fresh. In that respect, my curiosity was aroused.” He wanted to explore a different genre and create something for his fans. Clearly, the viewers are excited about the show.
Uncle Samsik will premiere on May 15, 2024, with five episodes on Disney Plus. Later, the drama will air two and three episodes each week in the final week.
