Overhaul of Albuquerque 98th Street and Gibson Boulevard to begin Monday

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The City of Albuquerque will begin “major construction” on an intersection in the Westgate neighborhood on Monday. Crews are expected to spend 10 months overhauling the 98th Street and Gibson Boulevard intersection.

One big change being made at the intersection includes replacing the four-way stop with a four-way signal. Other improvements include:

New road striping

New street lighting

Signalized left turn lanes

Several ADA pedestrian improvements

Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) improvements to help this intersection interact with nearby signals to keep traffic flowing

A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon at the Amole Arroyo Trail Crossing

Portion of Tramway closed for crash that killed 1, injured 2

“We see all this massive growth there, and it’s just one of the great neighborhoods in the city. And it’s time the infrastructure caught up,” said Dan Mayfield, public information officer for the city’s Department of Municipal Development.

During the construction, there will be a six-month detour of traffic through the area by a city contractor. Details about the detour can be found below:

Traffic headed westbound on Gibson will be detoured north on Barbados Avenue, then west on 86th Street/De Anza Drive.

Traffic headed eastbound on Gibson will be detoured south on Blake Road, then north on Mustang Ridge Road.

Traffic headed south on 98th will be detoured west on De Anza Drive, then south on Blake Road.

Traffic headed north on 98th Street will be detoured east on Blake Road, then north on Mustang Ridge Road.

The project will be constructed in four phases, and the detours are expected to begin during phase one starting Monday. Phase one is expected to last through September 2024. Additional phases will follow, with the project expected to be completed in February 2025.
