American post-hardcore legends Thursday shocked fans overnight with the announcement that they’d release their first song in 13 years, now available to listen to below.
Application For Release From The Dream is Thursday’s first song since their 2011 album No Devolución and their first release in 25 years without a record label.
Stating that they are “free” to make their own mistakes and be whatever band they want to be after 25 years of “legal disputes and public blowouts”, Thursday stepped on stage at a “tiny independent venue”: Empire Live in Albany to plug the new track.
“No matter the size of the stages we’ve played in those 25 years, we remain— at heart — a small band, a bunch of kids still screaming in a basement,” the band wrote in a poignant social media post. “But we’re your small band, and we love you. Thanks for everything. We’ll see you at midnight in your time zone. ‘It’s just a moment now.’”
As for the new track, Application For Release From The Dream opens with a synth-laden intro and commanding drum beat before Geoff Rickly’s ever-familiar vocal comes in.
Taking from the atmospheric vibes of No Devolución, Application For Release From The Dream feels like peak Thursday: epic, anthemic, and provides singalongs—not to mention a surprise breakdown towards the end.

Since embarking on an indefinite hiatus in 2011, Thursday reunited in 2016 and toured Australia in March 2018. They announced they’d break up again in 2019 but have been back performing since 2021, including opening for My Chemical Romance and playing at Chicago’s Riot Fest.
In 2022, Thursday bassist Tim Payne and drummer Tucker Rule formed a supergroup called L.S. Dunes with Frank Iero (My Chemical Romance), guitarist Travis Stever (Coheed And Cambria) and vocalist Anthony Green (Circa Survive).
In an interview with The Music, Frank Iero said about his new bandmates: “Tim is especially one of the greatest bass players I’ve ever seen. I play with some really great bass players, but he’s on another level; some of the choices that he makes are just… I don’t even know how to describe it.
“And the way he works with Tucker is impeccable because they’ve had such a long history together. I’ve gotten to play with Tucker before; I’ve been lucky enough to write with him and play with him in the past. And this is just even more fun because that rhythm section is so already locked.”
