New Mexico forests show some improvements, a new report reveals

Throughout the entire Valles Caldera, fishing waters are “Special Trout Waters” as defined by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish. That means there is a two-trout bag limit, and only artificial flies and single-barbless hook lures are allowed, according to NPS.

A New Mexico fishing license is required for anglers in the Valles Caldera, along with a special use permit. If you want to access waters in the backcountry, you will also need a backcountry vehicle pass.

Before you plan a fishing trip, make sure to check the Valles Caldera’s website for information on weather-related closures.
