ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The man charged with killing his father during a fight last year has taken a plea deal. Giovanni Salazar pled guilty to voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his father, Eddie Salazar, at his home near Coors and La Orilla. Salazar told 911 that the two were fighting and he accidentally shot his father in the hip.

Police say Salazar’s two young sons were in the home at the time. “At this time, the defendant and his father were both engaged in heavy drug use. There is evidence to support the fact that both of them had gone long periods of time without sleeping and had caused issues within the household,” said Christine Jablonsky.

The plea deal caps Salazar’s sentence to five years.
