Albuquerque will collect grass clippings, green waste for free

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The city will collect green waste such as grass clippings, leaves, and trimmings for free starting April 29. Collections will happen curbside throughout the city, and the green waste will be turned into mulch to prevent erosion at the Cerro Colorado Landfill.

The collections will run on the same schedule as normal curbside trash collections, the City of Albuquerque’s Solid Waste Management Department says. Green waste should be placed in trash bags at the curb by 7:00 a.m. The free collection program ends after Friday, May 10.

Tree branches don’t need to be in bags, but should be cut into four-foot lengths and bundled together. Each garbage bag filled with green waste should be under 40 pounds, the city says. Bags should be placed at least five feet away from trash and recycle bins.

“Providing residents with convenient options for proper green waste disposal is vital to ensuring the city remains committed to our environmental sustainability goals,” Solid Waste Management Department Director Billy Gallegos said in a press release. “When we provide residents with these opportunities, we enable them to be part of the conversation about the city’s efforts to be more sustainable.”

If you have questions about the waste collection, you can call 311 or 505-768-2000. Solid waste will not pick up dirt, construction debris, and the like.
