Angel City FC heads to Chicago in search of first win

The new season has started slowly for Angel City Football Club.

The team is winless through its first three games, has allowed six goals and scored just three.

On Saturday, ACFC will restart league play after the international break with a third consecutive road game, facing the Chicago Red Stars (6:30 p.m., ION).

“You have to carry on with your processes and what you’re doing,” ACFC coach Becki Tweed said. “Having that week where you don’t have to dive in on another team so much, and can really dial back and assess where we’ve fallen short. We don’t have time to look back, we’ve just got to reflect and move forward.

“We had three away games in the first four weeks. We went from a home game to playing on the road two weeks in a row and now we’re on the road again. These things add up at times, but don’t ever get taken into consideration when people look at the scores, results and how wild this league is.”

The Red Stars, under new coach Lorne Donaldson, are second in the league (seven points). Last season, Chicago finished last in the league with 24 points. Chicago rallied for a 2-2 draw against Angel City last year and won the second meeting 2-1.

“I think we’re doing a good job of just not letting anything from the past impact how we approach any of these games this year,” Chicago forward Ally Schlegel said. “It’s a fresh start with Angel City this year, we’re 0-0 against them this year and we’re going to approach it like we always do that we want to win.”

After this game, Angel City (0-2-1) will play four of its next six at BMO Stadium.

“There isn’t a week in this league where you can really predict anything,” Tweed said. “Everybody has the ability to beat anybody in this league. You have to play well and you have to grind out a result every week. It’s what makes this league so competitive and what it is.

“Any game in this league is a high-quality and high-challenge game. We are looking forward to the next challenge. We have to stay present, trust our process and keep building on what we’re building.”
