Armed Attack at Finnish School: 12-Year-Old Fatally Shot

One child died and two were injured in an armed attack that took place at a school in the city of Vantaa, Finland, police said, quoted by the BBC. The attacker, a 12-year-old minor, was arrested. The victims of the incident are also 12 years old.

Finnish authorities have announced that one of the three children injured in the armed attack at a school in the city of Vantaa has died. They also revised the ages of the children involved in the attack – victims and attacker – from 13 to 12.

Police said the suspect fled after the attack but was apprehended a short time later without incident. He had the gun with which he committed the attack on him. After the attack, the children were told to stay in their classrooms.

Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said that the incident shook him and that he was with the victims and their families.

Vantaa is the fourth largest city in Finland with approximately 240,000 inhabitants.

Finland has had two other deadly school shootings in 2007 and 2008, prompting stricter gun laws. But Finland is a country where hunting is practiced on a large scale, and the Finns are passionate about guns.

At the moment, in Finland 430,000 people legally own firearms, out of a population of 5.5 million.

In 2007, an 18-year-old student shot dead seven students and a teacher in the town of Tuusula, and the following year another student shot dead nine students and a teacher in the town of Kauhajoki.
