In the areas around Las Vegas, New Mexico home video captured something that author Bernadette Maldonado thought she’d never see. An animal that looked like a wolf just roaming around. Thanks to that video from January of 2023, State Fish and Wildlife officials confirmed that it was a Mexican grey wolf, who came to be known as Asha.

Maldonado, who’s also an art teacher at Luna Community College decided to put a creative touch on Asha and write a children’s book about Asha’s imaginary adventures called, “Why Asha Goes North.”

It didn’t take long for Maldonado to come up with adventures featuring Asha. “She went all the way down to White Sands, she travelled all the way to Albuquerque to the Bosque del Apache, she traveled all the way to Santa Rosa down into the Bosque all the way to Taos, to Questa to Las Vegas,” said Maldonado.

A second book is in the works which will also incorporate another visitor to New Mexico. When Asha meets up with the moose named Marty who was spotted near Santa Fe.
