Martha is a compulsive liar and starts making up fantastical tales about herself as soon as she meets Donny. She claims she’s a political advisor for some of the UK’s top officials, both current and former, yet can’t afford a cup of tea. The “Sent From My iPhone” signature plays into this same compulsion. She wants to be seen as a big-shot lawyer, not just some woman living on the dole in a dirty apartment.
Obviously, Martha is also an obsessive person. Her hand-typing “Sent From My iPhone” on every single message may tie into some form of OCD. She may feel physically uncomfortable or even ill if she doesn’t do it. It’s tough to be certain without any official confirmation of her diagnosis, but this likely is just one of her odd repetitive behaviors.
So, while the signature is funny at first glance, it’s likely just another symptom of her mental illness. When Donny enters her apartment, he finds that she has a drawer full of “dumb” phones but not a single Apple product, and it’s likely this is a habit she’s had for years.
