BEC vetoes the establishment of the United Right Alliance at PSD’s request

The Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) rejected the protocol for establishing the United Right Alliance formed by USR, PMP and Forța Dreptei, announced USR chairman Cătălin Drula. The President of USR announced that the BEC decision will be challenged at the High Court of Cassation and Justice (ÎCCJ) and invited people to the event on Sunday in University Square to collect signatures for the candidacies in the European Parliament and local elections on June 9.

“The rejection of the protocol of the United Right Alliance, at the request of PSD, is an act of political aggression coming from Iohannis, Ciolacu and Ciucă, which shows the whole country where we have reached with the state of democracy. But I promise them they won’t stop us! Millions of Romanians support an honest alternative to the current power. We have the right solutions to modernize Romania and we will not be hindered by the scams of the institutions they control. Despite the pretext used by the BEC, Eugen Tomac is the legitimate leader of the PMP, elected as early as 2022, with a Congress validated by the Bucharest Court. On February 2, 2024, the same Bucharest Court ordered the office of political parties to register the result of the last PMP congress. An executory decision, which is not implemented”, wrote Cătălin Drula on Facebook on Sunday.

He added that “the decision taken at PSD’s request has nothing to do with the laws and rules of a democratic state”. The USR leader added that the decision of the BEC rejecting the protocol of the United Right Alliance will be contested at the High Court.
“It is just an attempt to prevent us from participating in the elections under the United Right Alliance, a desperate attempt by Iohannis’ puppets, who know that their political end is approaching. What they are doing now is an act of cowardice and contempt for the will of the Romanians, which shows that the single PSD-PNL party is willing to trample on democracy to keep its power. The mafia state patronized by Klaus Iohannis is afraid of the United Right and is trying to remove us from the ballot as an Alliance, just as Dragnea tried with USR in 2019. We will appeal this decision to the High Court of Cassation and Justice. We will fight for our rights and for the future that this country deserves. We invite you to join us, today, in the University Square, starting at 16:00. We start collecting signatures for the candidacies on June 9. Our mission is a Romania without corruption, without abuse and without fear. Modern Romania is stronger than ever,” Drula stated.
In retort, PSD chairman Marcel Ciolacu denied any interference in the Central Electoral Bureau’s decision to reject the protocol for establishing the United Right Alliance formed by USR, PMP and Forța Dreptei, arguing that he does not even know what the judges are called.
“I have never commented, since I have been a politician, on any decision of any magistrate. No decision of the Constitutional Court. This is how the rule of law is defended. Those who accused until now that the PSD covers corruption, that the PSD does not know what it is doing, that the PSD… You cannot all your life, you cannot be the leader of the opposition only through hatred and only be against the PSD. You have to build something. They had the opportunity to build alongside the PNL for eight months or as long as the grand right-wing coalition lasted. And I saw what was left behind, a disaster, zero European funds, a PNRR that we have to negotiate continuously, not a single kilometer of highway“, Ciolacu told Digi24. He said that he doesn’t even know what the High Court judges who are part of the Central Electoral Bureau are called.
