Development for the sequel began in 1990 but faced numerous obstacles, including script rewrites and actor commitments. In September 2011, Warner Bros. hired Seth Grahame-Smith to write and produce a sequel, which gained momentum with potential returns from Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder.

Despite various setbacks, including script revisions and shelving, a sequel was announced in 2022, with Tim Burton returning as director. Filming commenced in 2023, featuring a star-studded cast including Jenna Ortega and Justin Theroux, and wrapped up by November 2023, with post-production underway by March 2024.
