Chilly, wet and windy Monday around New Mexico

It is a wet, Monday morning in the middle Rio Grande Valley, including the Metro. Snow is moving into the higher terrain of western, central and northern New Mexico. The roads are mainly wet, but they may worsen throughout the morning commute in the high terrain.

Scattered rain and mountain snow will continue across all of New Mexico throughout the mid-late morning through tonight. Winter weather advisories will be in effect in the Jemez, Sacramento and western high terrain, while winter storm warnings will be in effect in the Sangre de Cristo, Raton Pass and Mesas. The winter storm warnings will yield higher snowfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches, and the advisories will yield about 2 to 6 inches of snow, with locally higher amounts at peaks. Roads will become snow covered and slick tonight through Tuesday morning, especially in the Raton area and northeast highlands.

Temperatures will stay chilly today as a cold front moves through New Mexico. The winds will be breezy statewide, but strong in southeast New Mexico. Wind advisories and high wind warnings will be in effect in the southeast plains, where 50 to 75 mph westerly wind gusts are expected this afternoon and evening.
