Competition Council Greenlights Rheinmetall’s Automecanica Mediaș Acquisition
The Competition Council authorized the operation by which Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH intends to take over the company Automecanica Mediaș SRL and its subsidiary, Atelierele Speciale Autocamioane Mediaș. The factory in Sibiu county will have a key role in the operational training of combat vehicles used in Ukraine, according to Rheinmetall.
Following the analysis, the Competition Council found that this transaction does not raise significant obstacles to effective competition on the Romanian market or on a substantial part of it and that there are no serious doubts regarding its compatibility with a normal competitive environment, according to a press release of the institution.
Rheinmetall, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of military equipment and supplier to the Ukrainian army, announced in February the acquisition of a 72.5% stake in Automecanica Mediaș, a transaction seen by the German company as a strategy.
The factory in Mediaş will have a key role in the operational training of combat vehicles used in Ukraine, said Rheinmetall.
This acquisition strengthens the Dusseldorf-based company’s presence in Central Europe, opening the door to new customers in countries in the region with substantial sales potential, according to a statement from the German company. Rheinmetall already has operations in two other countries on NATO’s eastern flank, Hungary and Lithuania.
