ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury spoke at a virtual press event Monday morning, addressing a new rule meant to make land conservation easier.
“It brings a modern, 21st century world view to the Federal Lands Management Act, which for many decades has been managed with the idea that lands are there for extraction and for use without protection,” Congresswoman Stansbury said during the virtual press event.
The new rule allows for land to be leased for restoration and conservation; in the same way land can currently be leased by oil companies for drilling. The rule allows for a special designation to be put on land, that will restrict development with historic or cultural significance or land that is deemed important for wildlife conservation.
