IHSA-sanctioned girls flag football coming to all five U-46 high schools
All five School District U-46 high schools will have IHSA-sanctioned junior varsity and varsity girls flag football teams this fall.
U-46 School Board members approved an $88,250 contract Monday with BSN and Rock Solid Sporting Goods to cover program start-up costs.
The IHSA plans to conduct its inaugural flag football postseason this fall. Larkin and Streamwood already have club level teams, and U-46 officials have said there is enough interest at the other three schools for them to field teams and have a full schedule of games.

Hanover Township offering stroke risk assessment screenings in May
The Hanover Township Office of Community Health will offer stroke risk assessment screenings throughout May as part of National Stroke Risk Awareness Month.
Screenings are $5 and include total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and BMI tests, according to a township news release. They will be offered at the Astor Avenue Community Center, 7431 Astor Ave, Hanover Park, and at the township Senior Center, 240 S. Route 59, Bartlett.
Nurses will review results and provide stroke prevention education.

Elgin library to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander month
The Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin is presenting programs to celebrate Asian and Pacific Islander Month. They include:
Kathak: Classical Indian Dance: Gauri Jog will perform Kathak, a traditional dance from India, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 8.
“The Betrayal: Nerakhoon” screening: The Oscar-nominated film, centering on a family’s flight from Laos and the difficulty members have as they try to assimilate into American life, will be shown at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16.
How to Make Spring Rolls with Douangchay: Learn how to make spring rolls with cook and cafe owner Douangchay Hedstrom from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 29. Samples will be provided.
All three events are being held in the Meadows Community Rooms at the main library, 270 N. Grove Ave.

Elgin’s annual Police Memorial Service to be held downtown next week
The Elgin Police Department will host its annual Police Memorial Service at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 15, in the courtyard between The Hemmens Cultural Center and Elgin City Hall in downtown Elgin.
The event recognizes the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers and pays special recognition to those who have lost their lives in the line of duty, an announcement on the police department’s Facebook page said.
In the event of inclement weather, the service will be held in the Heritage Ballroom at the Edward Schock Centre of Elgin, 100 Symphony Way.

Program on stamp collecting being held at the St. Charles Public Library
The St. Charles Public Library will host a stamp collecting program at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 14, in the Huntley Community Room at the library, 1 S. Sixth Ave.
It will be presented by St. Charles resident Gary Danzer, a lifelong philatelist who got into stamp collecting “as a way to see the world” without leaving home, according to a news release for the event.
Danzer will share how to get started collected stamps, what supplies you’ll need and how to appraise your family’s old stamp collection.
