Introducing Feministech 🙌
For our first-ever featured org, I’m delighted to put the spotlight on Feministech. This feminist community made up of women and nonbinary folks has been on DEV for over 2 years now spreading knowledge and positivity through the posts they share and the way in which they interact with others. Notably, they are repping our #braziliandevs community in a fantastic way with most of their members being from Brazil. All in all, they are just a really great group of folks who we are proud to have in our community. Let’s give it up for Feministech! 👏
The Interview
A special shoutout to the to the different members of Feministech whom I interviewed: Letícia Pegoraro Garcez (@lelepg), Morganna (@morgannadev), and Pachi (@pachicodes). Y’all rock!

Michael Tharrington: What is the origin story of Feministech? Can you talk about y’all’s primary goals? What are your hopes and plans for Feministech in the future?
PT 🇧🇷
Qual é a história de origem da Feministech? Você pode falar sobre os objetivos principais de vocês? Quais são suas esperanças e planos para a Feministech no futuro?
Letícia (@lelepg): Well, Feministech didn’t start as Feministech. In the beginning, we were Live Coders Girls, which was a Twitch team that emerged as a sort of response to a promotional video Twitch made about live coding, featuring only male streamers. For a while, we stayed as Live Coders Girls, but soon there was a need for rebranding because the community had evolved significantly. We no longer had only people who streamed live in the community; we also had people producing other types of content, or people who only consumed content, and we also felt the need to explicitly open the community to transgender women and non-binary people. This rebranding process was somewhat magical because we were able to see the community being reborn and growing before our eyes.
I think our key objective is to build a diverse and inclusive community. People from underrepresented groups need to have this kind of space and be able to share their struggles and achievements with others who also share the same struggles and achievements. I think this objective is the big “umbrella” that encompasses Feministech’s other objectives, such as increasing the representation of minorities in the tech world and encouraging people from these minorities to produce content.
The future is… complicated to think about. Feministech is a beautiful community that has changed a lot over time, especially with the return to normalcy after the pandemic. We’ve imagined a lot of things for Feministech, some of which we’ve been able to fulfill and put into practice, while others will never come to light. We’ve learned, somewhat forcibly, that no matter the plans we make, life will always find a way to interfere significantly with them. Bom, a Feministech não nasceu como Feministech. Lá no início eramos a Live Coders Girls, que era basicamente um time da twitch que surgiu como uma espécie de resposta a um vídeo promocional que a Twitch fez sobre live coding, apenas com streamers homens. Por algum tempo, ficamos como Live Coder Grils, mas logo surgiu a necessidade de um “re branding” por que a comunidade se modificou bastante. Não tinhamos mais só gente que fazia live na comunidade, tinhamos também gente que produzia outros tipos de conteúdo, ou pessoas que só consumiam conteúdo e também sentimos a necessidade de abrir a comunidade de uma forma mais explícita para mulheres trans e pessoas não binárias. Esse processo de rebranding foi algo meio mágico porque conseguimos ver a comunidade renascer e crescer diante dos nossos olhos.
Acho que o nosso objetivo chave é construir uma comunidade diversa e inclusiva. É muito importante para as pessoas de grupos menos representados terem esse tipo de espaço e poderem compartilhar suas dores e suas conquistas com pessoas que também compartilham das mesmas dores e conquistas. Acho que esse objetivo é o grande “guarda chuva” que abriga os outros objetivos da Feministech como aumentar a representatividade de minorias no mundo tech e incentivar as pessoas que fazem parte dessas minorias a produzir conteúdo.
O Futuro é… complicado de se pensar. A Feministech é uma comunidade linda, e que mudou muito com o passar do tempo, e principalmente com a volta ao normal depois da pandemia. Já imaginamos muita coisa pra Feministech, algumas delas conseguimos cumprir e por em prática, outras jamais virão a público. Aprendemos meio que a força que não importa os planos que fizermos, a vida sempre vai dar um jeito de interferir bastante neles. Nesse momento só queremos que a Feministech continue ativa e que continue caminhando pra esse ousado objetivo de ampliar as vozes dos grupos que são o foco da comunidade.
Michael: We really wanted to interview y’all during we_coded because Feministech has been representative of not only women, but also transgender, nonbinary, and gender-queer technologists here at DEV. During we_coded and all year long, we strive to uplift and amplify the work of these communities. Can y’all explain why it’s important to create spaces and events for folks to talk about gender equity in tech?

Queríamos muito entrevistar vocês durante o we_coded porque a Feministech tem sido representativa não apenas de mulheres, mas também de tecnólogos transgêneros, não binários e de gênero queer aqui no DEV. Durante o we_coded e durante todo o ano, nos esforçamos para elevar e ampliar o trabalho dessas comunidades. Vocês podem explicar por que é importante criar espaços e eventos para as pessoas falarem sobre igualdade de gênero na tecnologia?
Morganna (@morgannadev) & Letícia (@lelepg): We shouldn’t just create spaces for this; we should integrate ourselves into spaces that already exist in other areas of technology. And integrating ourselves into these spaces requires a lot from us. Doing so without a supportive community would be much more challenging than it already is. Creating these spaces – even if they have been ours from the beginning – allows us to begin building the confidence that we can belong to a place that was once denied to us. No matter how much we study, or how dedicated we are to our careers, we always doubt our abilities. And the society around us doesn’t help with that. In addition to all our discussions about diversity and inclusion, the feeling of belonging is the most difficult and crucial to achieve. So, that’s the importance of creating these spaces: to feel part of technology, to feel part of what we want to be, without question.

Não devemos apenas criar espaços para isso; devemos nos inserir nos espaços que já existem em outras áreas da tecnologia. E nos inserir nesses espaços exige muito de nós. Fazer isso sem uma comunidade de apoio seria muito mais complicado do que já é. Criar esses espaços – mesmo que eles já fossem nossos desde o início – nos permite começar a construir a confiança de que podemos pertencer a um lugar que nos foi negado um dia. Não importa o quanto estudemos, o quanto nos dediquemos à nossa carreira, sempre duvidamos de nossa capacidade. E a sociedade ao nosso redor não ajuda nisso. Além de todas as nossas discussões sobre diversidade e inclusão, o sentimento de pertencimento é o mais difícil e o mais crucial para conquistarmos. Então, essa é a importância de criar esses espaços: para nos sentirmos parte da tecnologia, para nos sentirmos parte do que queremos ser, sem questionamentos.
Michael: I’m curious how Feministech is using DEV. I know you have an organization, but can you talk about how y’all operate within it? For instance, do you ever provide edits for each other or help amplify one another’s posts? How do you recruit new members and integrate them into the org and DEV community? Do you ever post about projects, meetups, or something else that y’all are promoting?

Estou curioso para saber como a Feministech está usando o DEV. Eu sei que vocês têm uma organização, mas vocês podem falar sobre como vocês operam dentro dela? Por exemplo, vocês fornecem edições uns aos outros ou ajudam a amplificar as postagens uns dos outros? Como você recruta novos membros e os integra à comunidade organizacional e DEV? Você já posta sobre projetos, encontros ou qualquer outra coisa que vocês estão promovendo?
Letícia (@lelepg): Our posts on Dev.to are quite eclectic. The amazing individuals who write for our community have diverse experiences, which means we have a lot of great content covering various tech areas, as well as career, life, and other topics not necessarily related to the tech field. The themes are quite open, and each person can write about what they feel makes the most sense for them at that moment. We understand that the organization of the community is there much more as a way to gather incredible content, obviously, but it also aims to promote the people in the community who write articles. Many of the people who participate in the community also create content, and the organization emerged as a way to further boost the content of these individuals, as well as other community members who started producing content for Dev. It’s incredibly gratifying for us that these individuals dared to start writing through the Feministech organization.

Nossas postagens no Dev.to são bem ecléticas. As pessoas incríveis que escrevem pra nossa comunidade tem experiências diversas, e isso faz com que tenhamos muito conteúdo legal sobre diversas áreas tech, e também sobre carreira, vida e outras coisas não necessáriamente ligadas a área tech. Os temas são bem livres, e cada pessoa pode escrever sobre o que acha que faz mais sentido para ela naquele momento. Entendemos que a organização da comunidade está ali muito mais como uma forma de reunir conteúdo incrível, obviamente, mas também tem o objetivo de promover as pessoas da comunidade que escrevem artigos. Muitas das pessoas que participam da comunidade também criam conteúdo, e a organização surgiu como uma forma pra impulsionar ainda mais os conteúdos dessas pessoas, e de outras pessoas da comunidade que começaram a produzir conteúdo pro dev e é muito incrível pra gente que essas pessoas tenham tido essa coragem de começar a escrever através da organização da Feministech.
Michael: From the perspective of developers based in Brazil, how does the software development culture in the country compare to that of other parts of the world? Do you perceive gender equity to be a more significant or lesser issue in Brazil compared to places like the US? Are there unique challenges and/or strengths that you all recognize regarding gender equity in Brazil?

Na perspectiva dos desenvolvedores baseados no Brasil, como a cultura de desenvolvimento de software no país se compara à de outras partes do mundo? Você percebe que a equidade de gênero é uma questão mais significativa ou menor no Brasil em comparação com lugares como os EUA? Existem desafios e/ou pontos fortes únicos que todos vocês reconhecem em relação à equidade de gênero no Brasil?
Pachi (@pachicodes): In Brazil, the software development culture thrives on collaboration and innovation, with a strong emphasis on community engagement. However, gender equity remains a significant issue, mirroring global trends with women and non-binary individuals being underrepresented in tech roles. Unique challenges in Brazil include cultural norms and biases that perpetuate gender disparities, alongside infrastructure limitations that can hinder access to opportunities. Despite these challenges, there’s a growing awareness and advocacy efforts within Brazil’s tech community, exemplified by initiatives like Feministech, aimed at fostering diversity, inclusion, and empowerment. Comparatively, while gender equity issues exist in both Brazil and worldwide, the specific challenges and cultural contexts may differ, underscoring the need for intersectional approaches to address diverse experiences and promote equity in the tech industry globally

Michael: Can you talk about some of the different things that you all do at Feministech? For instance, are there any projects, websites, meetups, etc. that you’d like point us to?

Você pode falar sobre algumas das coisas diferentes que todos vocês fazem na Feministech? Por exemplo, há algum projeto, site, encontro, etc. que você gostaria de nos indicar?
Letícia (@lelepg): Currently, at Feministech, we are focusing more on internal events within the community’s Discord server and exclusive in-person events for people from underrepresented groups that fit into Feministech. During the pandemic, we also held several open online events on Twitch and launched our podcast, but we needed to realign our priorities at the beginning of this year to try to focus our energies on the best way to serve the community. Atualmente na Feministech estamos focando mais em eventos internos dentro do próprio discord da comunidade e em eventos presenciais exclusivos para as pessoas dos grupos menos representados que se encaixam na Feministech.
