February 2024: Romania’s Warmest Winter Month on Record

February was an exceptionally warm month in Romania, with few days with frost and many days with maximums above 15 C. The National Meteorology Administration announced that last month was the warmest February in the last 124 years, and last winter was the warmest so far in Romania.

The average monthly air temperature for the country in February 2024 was 7.3 °C. Thus, February 2024 is the warmest in the interval 1901 – 2024, according to ANM data.
The winter of 2023-2024 was the warmest winter in Romania, from the interval 1901-2024, with an average temperature per country of 3.8 °C. Thus, the previous record was surpassed, namely in the winter of 2022 – 2023, when the average seasonal temperature in the country had a value of 3.1 °C, the ANM analysis also shows.
December, January and February are considered winter months, meteorologically speaking. In the last seven years, the average temperature in the country in the winter season has been positive, and the general trend of temperature evolution in this season is increasing.
In February 2024, the monthly absolute maximum temperature was equaled or exceeded, at 29 meteorological stations, even records from 1958 were exceeded.
The maximum monthly temperature in February 2024, recorded at the meteorological stations in the network of the National Meteorological Administration, was 22.7 °C, in Zimnicea, on February 24.
The warmest winter months so far in Romania were February 2016, 2002 and 1966. The warmest January was in 2023, and the warmest December was in 2020. February 2024 far surpasses the eight-year-old record years, making it the warmest winter month since complete weather records exist (last 64 years).
