ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Habtom Samuel came in as a freshman at UNM, put his foot on the gas and never looked back. The highly decorated freshman added to his resume Wednesday by being named Mountain West Indoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year.
Samuel dominated the field this season, winning titles in the five thousand meters and three thousand meters. He also had a strong showing on the national level, finishing fourth in the five thousand meter race at the NCAA Championship. His time of 13:30.07 was the fastest time by a freshman at this year’s event. Samuel is the first Lobo to pick up the conference postseason honor since 2015 and seventh overall.
