Orașul Avdiivka din estul Ucrainei, capturat de ruși după retragerea forțelor ucrainene, este acum o ruină. Zona a fost supusă unora dintre cele mai aprige bătălii de la începutul războiului, iar imaginile surprinse de la fața locului arată, între altele, blocuri complet distruse și drumuri presărate cu cratere formate de bombardamente.
Sâmbătă, 17 februarie, Ucraina a anunțat că își retrage complet trupele din oraș, pentru că trupele riscau să fie încercuite de forțele ruse. Rusia a revendicat capturarea orașului, însă susține că în fabrica de cocs din zonă se mai află încă militari ucraineni.
Căderea orașului Avdiivka este cea mai mare victorie a Rusiei de la capturarea orașului Bahmut în mai 2023.
După doi ani de lupte aprige, orașul a rămas într-o ruină, cu infrastructura civilă complet distrusă.

Avdiivka, cu o populație antebelică de 30.000 de oameni, și comunitățile din jur se află pe linia frontului încă din 2014, când militanții susținuți de Rusia au cucerit zone din estul Ucrainei.
Forțele ruse și-au intensificat însă eforturile de a cuceri orașul începând din luna octombrie 2023, când au lansat atacuri pe scară largă pentru a încercui zona. Inițial, aceste încercări au eșuat în mare parte și au dus la unele dintre cele mai mari pierderi rusești din timpul războiului, zeci de mii de soldați fiind uciși și răniți, potrivit armatei ucrainene, oficialilor britanici și americani.
La începutul anului însă, rușii au reușit să intre în oraș și au intensificat bombardamentele asupra zonei, iar de atunci, pierderile ucrainene au început să crească.
