Lake County coroner reports three weekend homicides

The Lake County Coroner’s office reported it ruled three weekend deaths as homicides.

A 14-year-old Chicago boy was shot and killed in Whiting early Saturday evening.

The Lake County Coroner’s office released that Damien Abenante, of the 4500 block of S. Emerald Avenue, was pronounced dead of a gunshot wound around 6:08 p.m. March 23. The shooting occurred in the 1600 block of LaPorte Avenue, according to the release.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is investigating.

Hammond Police are investigating the early Saturday morning stabbing death of a Hammond man.

Tommy Washington, 53, of the 1000 block of Lyons Court, was pronounced dead around 8:04 a.m. March 23, according to the Lake County Coroner’s office. The stabbing happened in the 2300 block of 169th Street, the release said.

The Hammond Police and Fire Departments assisted.

The coroner’s office also was called in to investigate the death of Luis Ramirez, 27, of the 1000 block of W. 145th St. in East Chicago. The office was called to the scene at 4:23 p.m. Sunday, March 24, and ruled that Ramirez died of a gunshot wound.

The East Chicago Police Department, Homicide Task Force and Lake County CSI are investigating; Christian R. Maldonado, 22, of East Chicago, has been charged with murder, among other counts, in the shooting.
