Language competition in New Mexico helps boost Chinese language learning

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – New Mexico educators are coming together to support Chinese language learning with a speech competition and talent show. The event begs the question: 你会说中文吗?

That means “Do you speak Chinese?” And for students competing in the April 20 New Mexico Chinese Language Speech Competition, the answer is: “当然” (“of course”)!

The competition will give language students from elementary to university level a chance to show off their skills and learn more about Chinese culture. This year’s theme is “the most interesting thing about learning Chinese,” and participants are encouraged to share their personal language-learning journey. For the first time, the event is expanded to bring adult and young language learners into the mix as well.

“We are thrilled to bring this event to a wider audience, promoting Chinese language learning from a young age,” Ariana Koers, a Rio Rancho Chinese teacher and one of the event coordinators, said in a press release. “This competition not only enhances linguistic skills but also strengthens cultural ties within the community.”

Entry to the event is free and visitors can learn more about Chinese language classes offered at schools and communities. The event will be at Menaul School (301 Menaul Blvd. NE, Albuquerque NM, 87107), on Saturday, April 20th at 10 a.m.
