Listen: Woods Release New Surprise EP ‘Five More Flowers’

Rmag Breaking News

Woods have surprised fans today with Five More Flowers, a new EP released in full via Woodsist. Composed of five tracks recorded during the sessions that gave rise to 2023’s acclaimed Perennial, this latest offering continues a trend in the band’s output from recent years, embracing sun-soaked, wide-open arrangements and a hazy, tactfully lo-fi sound. This marks the band’s first release of 2024, twenty years following its initial formation.

The songs included on Five More Flowers trace their origins to a scattered assortment of bedroom melodies and drum loops from vocalist Jeremy Earl. From this meditative starting point, the group convened at home to slowly add color in a newly collaborative songwriting workflow, before finally taking these new concepts to Stinson Beach, Calif.’s Panoramic House. Led by the stirring single “Lay With Luck,” the offerings on this new tape exude the intimacy of the process behind them, thriving in a low, cozy register awash with fluid guitars, reverberating vocals and softly cascading percussive patterns. Listen to the lead track below.

Woods’ latest EP arrives just before the outset of its tour with Avey Tare, which begins this Friday, April 5 with a performance at Woodstock, N.Y.’s Colony; next week, the bands will return to New York for an exciting staging at the Knockdown Center, alongside Laraaji and Natural Information Society. After nine dates running through April 14, the band will join Waxahatchee for a three-show run from August 16-18.
