Man smashes glass door at home of Mayor Karen Bass and breaks in, is arrested

A man was arrested Sunday, April 21, on suspicion of breaking into Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass’s home in the Hancock Park neighborhood by smashing a glass door, authorities said.

Around 6:40 a.m., the intruder broke into the Getty House — the official residence of the mayor of Los Angeles, located at 605 South Irving Boulevard — said Deputy Mayor of Communications Zach Seidl. Bass and her family were home at the time of the break-in, but were unharmed.

It was unclear if anything was taken; and if the break-in targeted Bass or was random.

“The mayor is grateful to LAPD for responding and arresting the suspect,” Seidl said.

The man was taken into custody without incident, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Information on the suspect, including a possible motive, was not immediately available.

Investigators were collecting evidence and taking photos at the home Sunday afternoon. Authorities told reporters at the scene that the intruder broke though a glass door to enter the home, an alarm alerted police and officers immediately responded and encountered a man whom they arrested.

Bass’s former residence in the Baldwin Vista community was burglarized in 2022 when she was a congresswoman and mayoral candidate, with two revolvers having been stolen from a safe box in her closet. Two men were later arrested in Van Nuys.
