New Mexico Supreme Court gives students chance to hear live oral arguments

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – The Rule of Law Program is a live civics educational program for middle school, high school and college students.

In the program the New Mexico Supreme Court holds an oral argument that students listen to. After the argument students will have a Q&A session with the justices and will have a chance to ask attorneys questions. This year the oral arguments will be held at Smith Brasher Hall at CNM on Monday, April 29 at 10 a.m.

The oral argument for this year’s program will be Johnson v. Board of Education for Albuquerque Public Schools e. al. In the case, a student brought an action under the Human Rights Act alleging her teacher’s conduct during a class on Halloween violated her protected rights.

Materials for students and teachers will be provided for review ahead of time that summarize the case and include a lesson plan. Schools that would like to participate in person are encouraged to reach out and register as space is limited.
