New Mexico tax filing deadline is Monday, April 15

SANTA FE, N.M. (KRQE) – It’s that time of year again. New Mexico income tax returns are due Monday, April 15. The returns are for the 2023 tax year.

The New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD) recommends filing and paying electronically. This is the fastest way to get access to any refunds you may be owed.

The tax department may contact you by mail in order to verify your identity. This is to help combat identity theft, TRD says.

Income tax forms are available online at this link. Paper copies of forms are also available in the Albuquerque office lobby at 10500 Copper Ave. NE. You can also order forms by calling 1-866-285-2996.

Once you submit your tax returns, you can check on the status of your return and any refunds by using the online Taxpayer Access Point system at this link. You can also use the “Where’s My Refund” link on that page without creating an account.

Once TRD receives your paperwork, it may take up to 12 weeks to process refunds. TRD says e-filed returns are generally processed faster than paper returns.

This year, there are a range of credits and refundable rebates available for New Mexicans. For example, there is a new Child Tax Credit that offers up to $600 per qualifying child. The actual amount you receive will depend on your income. Be sure to read the personal income tax instructions to see if you qualify for other credits, like the Working Families Tax Credit, the Low-Income Comprehensive Tax Rebate, or other incentives, TRD says.

New Mexicans who did not earn enough income to require a return can still file a state tax return. This may allow them to receive refunds, even if they did not have income withheld, TRD says.
