NEW MEXICO (KRQE) – Hundreds of people made the trek up to the top of Tomé Hill on Friday in observance of Good Friday. Cars were lined on either side of the road through town as pilgrims of all ages made their way.

Once people made it to the top, there were musicians and missionaries offering communion for those who wanted it. Many have been taking the pilgrimage for many years. “I’ve been walking it since I was little with my grandmother who’s from Mexico and it’s always been her tradition so we’ve just been doing it all our lives,” says Ashley Gorecki. “My grandma’s 94, so she was our inspiration to walk up here and pray for her as she’s getting older and weaker and she’s losing her strength to just keep going, so we’re her strength now.”

Leroy Baca says for him, Tomé Hill is a place of worship. “You come over here and have silent prayers. I talk to a lot of people that are having some issues and they come over here and worship. They believe in faith and they pray to God to help them; their illnesses and whatever they need. A lot of people need happiness and they come over here and gain a lot of it.”
