Q1 Labor Market: 75,000 New Jobs & 3 Million Applications

Q1 Labor Market: 75,000 New Jobs & 3 Million Applications

75,000 new jobs have been posted year-to-date, nearly 10% less than the same period last year. About a third of the total jobs came from retail employers, while services were the second most active employer of the first quarter, with 10,000 jobs posted. Call-center / BPO placed third, followed by tourism, food industry and construction.

“Tourism is a sector that has grown rapidly in the ranking in the last month, since recruitment for the warm season began. We see here not only more jobs posted by employers in Romania, but also by those abroad. An indicator that was followed with interest by everyone in the first quarter was the evolution of the number of jobs in construction and the food industry, after the facilities that employers in these sectors had were removed at the end of last year. There were, at that time, prospects for a decrease in the number of new jobs, but the figures for the first three months show us that we are still talking about two industries that have large volumes of employment. Together, they put more than 15,000 jobs on the market”, says Bogdan Badea, CEO of eJobs.ro.

The distribution of jobs shows that only 8.7% of them are still remote, and 4.2% are for abroad. 87.1% are jobs for which employers require presence in the office. The capital continues to have the largest pool of opportunities for those who want to get hired, with half of the posted jobs being for Bucharest and Ilfov. The ranking continues with Cluj (with 13,000 jobs), Iași (12,000), Timiș (9,000) and Brașov (8,500). Companies from Neamț, Ialomița, Argeș and Brăila recruited the least. If in terms of jobs there was a decrease of almost 10% compared to Q1 2023, in the case of applications there was an increase of the same percentage, and the first three months of the year brought more than 3 million applications.

“It’s a relationship of proportionality that appears repeatedly on the labor market – when the job offer contracts, the number of applications increases. When the number of jobs goes up, the level of applications is capped”, explains Bogdan Badea.

The most active candidates were those in the 25-35 age group, followed by 18-24 and 36-45. Candidates from the 45+ segment applied the least. Although employers are no longer as willing as in recent years to have employees who work remotely, candidates continue to be attracted to this way of working that allows them more flexibility. Thus, 13.2% of the total number of applications went to remote jobs. The same is not true for jobs abroad, which received less than 2% of all applications.

Most of the candidates sought employment in retail, call-center / BPO and services. IT / telecom, banking and construction are the next three fields in the top of preferences. On the other hand, the textile industry, real estate, arts & entertainment and education / training are the areas that aroused the least interest of those looking for a job.
