Thieves abandon SUV stolen in Elgin after man thwarts second car theft in Carpentersville

Two men are being sought for stealing an SUV in Elgin and trying to steal a car in Carpentersville, authorities said.

Carpentersville police were notified of the attempted car theft in the 200 block of Waverly Court about 5:30 a.m. Monday, Deputy Police Chief Kevin Stankowitz said.

The victim told officers he had started his car and was inside his house waiting for it to warm up when he saw someone in the vehicle while a Subaru SUV waited nearby.

When he came outside, one of the suspects pointed something that looked like a gun at him before the man inside the vehicle took off on foot and the man in the SUV drove away, Stankowitz said.

The thieves were dressed in all black clothing, including hooded jackets and masks, according to reports.

Stankowitz said the SUV was found abandoned near the intersection of Rosewood Drive and Maple Avenue in Carpentersville. Police conducted a search of the area but the suspects were not found, he said.

It was later determined the abandoned vehicle had been stolen from a driveway in the 300 block of Congdon Avenue in Elgin. The owner reported it missing Monday morning, Stankowitz said.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
